Microsoft Teams Phone guide
How to connect Microsoft Teams Phone to NORANGO
Use the appropriate Teams Phone layer: user call settings, Auto Attendants, Call Queues, Operator Connect or certified-SBC Direct Routing.
Teams Phone: person, queue or Auto Attendant
The retained Microsoft guidance uses Teams administration rather than a handset shortcode. Put the handover in the layer that owns the caller journey.
- Named user fallback:
Use Teams Phone user call settings. - Shared business journey:
Use Auto Attendants and Call Queues under Voice. - PSTN connection design:
Use Operator Connect or Direct Routing only after confirming the calling model and certified-SBC requirements.
Important: Do not assume queue calls follow an agent’s personal forwarding rule. Direct Routing requires a Microsoft-certified SBC.
Microsoft Teams Phone supports user call forwarding and unanswered-call handling, while its voice applications offer separate Auto Attendant and Call Queue journeys. Teams also supports different PSTN connection models including Calling Plans, Operator Connect and Direct Routing through a certified SBC.
The cleanest NORANGO design usually starts with the current Teams calling model and then identifies whether the handover belongs to a person, a menu, a queue or a certified connectivity architecture.
Where NORANGO can join the call journey
There is no need to replace a working phone system simply to improve call handling. The practical decision is which calls should reach NORANGO, and at what point.
1. Divert the calls you choose
Keep the number with its current provider and forward all calls, or only calls that meet an agreed condition, to NORANGO. Available conditions and charges depend on the provider product.
2. Let your team try first
Keep users, a hunt group, queue or opening-hours rule ahead of NORANGO. The handover happens when the first call path is busy, unanswered, overflowing or closed.
3. Use a compatible direct route
Some cloud and PBX environments may support a more direct connection. NORANGO confirms the provider product, permissions and technical route before proposing it.
4. Port the number when it suits you
Porting is a separate long-term option, not a requirement to begin. A number hosted with NORANGO can still route callers to agreed people, teams and departments.
What callers experience
When your team is busy
Caller → your business number → usual team or queue → no answer, busy or overflow condition → NORANGO. Your callers still meet the team path you have chosen first; NORANGO becomes the useful next step rather than a missed call.
When your office is closed
Caller → your business number → opening-hours rule → out-of-hours route → NORANGO. Daytime routing can remain as it is while evenings, weekends, holidays or planned coverage follow the agreed reception journey.
When a call needs to return to your business
NORANGO follows the agreed greeting, information capture, booking, escalation and transfer path. The call or its context can return to the agreed person, department or team when that is the right next step.
Choose the Teams Phone building block
User call settings
Teams Phone documents immediate forwarding, simultaneous ringing and unanswered-call handling for individual users.
Auto Attendant and Call Queue
Teams admins can configure business/after-hours menus, queues, timeout and overflow/redirect behaviour.
Operator Connect or Direct Routing
Teams can reach the PSTN through a certified operator or a customer-provided certified SBC.
Example: Teams after-hours Auto Attendant
Teams Auto Attendants support business-hours and after-hours schedules, greetings and routing/menu destinations. The approved Teams administrator can set the handover after the caller journey is agreed.
Teams implementation sequence
1. Identify the Teams calling model
Confirm Calling Plan, Operator Connect or Direct Routing, the resource accounts involved and the current voice application architecture.
2. Put the route in the correct place
Microsoft documents user settings in Teams administration, Auto Attendants and Call Queues under Voice, and Direct Routing through a certified SBC configuration.
3. Test queues and escalation
Test business-hours, after-hours, menu and overflow scenarios separately. Keep the queue and user-routing assumptions separate.
Teams connection choice
Can Teams Phone forward every user call?
Microsoft documents Immediate forwarding and simultaneous ringing for Teams Phone users, plus unanswered-call handling. Confirm the permitted target and policy for your tenant.
Can an Auto Attendant route differently after hours?
Microsoft documents business-hours and after-hours schedules for Auto Attendants, with greetings and routing/menu choices.
Do queue calls follow an agent's personal forwarding rule?
Do not assume that. Microsoft’s voice-application guidance distinguishes Call Queue behaviour from a user's individual call-answering settings.
Can a PBX connect directly to Teams?
Teams Direct Routing is documented through a Microsoft-certified SBC with specified DNS, certificate, firewall and voice-routing configuration.
